Fun Fridays: Community Partnership & Collaborative Education Days

Fridays are set aside as a special day of partnership and collaborative education with members of the Malone community, CCS family community, and our local Canton community. These days of instruction focus on real-life, engaging, and interactive experiences, while incorporating important life skills with our students. Students engage in art projects that focus on the process of creating instead of just the results. Multi-age learning groups are components of Fun Fridays to develop and foster a sense of school community. Most Fridays, school lunches are eaten in the Malone cafeteria or brought to our school from the cafeteria, offering a variety of food options to our students.

Partnership experiences include:

  • Animal shows put on by Malone University’s Biology Department with live animals from Malone’s zoo
  • Visit to the Canton Fire Department
  • Multi-generational activities with residents at Canton Christian Home
  • Demonstrations by a local beekeeper
  • Learning lacrosse terms and drills with Malone University women’s lacrosse team

Curriculum

Our curriculum aligns with Ohio state standards, carefully curated by our teachers to fully engage your child in the learning experience. The curriculum is designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and a deep understanding of core concepts through hands-on activities and real-world applications.

  • Language Arts

Heggerty and Orton-Gillingham are aligned with the latest Science of Reading research and educational standards, ensuring that students receive high-quality instruction that builds a strong foundation for reading success and confidence.

  • Why do we use Orton-Gillingham?

    • The Orton-Gillingham approach is highly regarded in primary education for its structured, sequential, and multisensory methodology, which effectively supports early literacy development.

    • It breaks reading and spelling into fundamental components and progressively builds on these skills, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of language mechanics.

    • This method engages multiple senses—sight, hearing, touch, and movement—facilitating deeper learning and retention among young students.

    • Originally designed to assist struggling readers, particularly those with dyslexia, Orton-Gillingham's explicit and direct instruction has proven beneficial for all learners.

    • Its emphasis on individualized instruction allows teachers to tailor lessons to each student's pace and needs, fostering confidence and competence in reading and writing.
  • Why do we use Heggerty?

    • Heggerty’s curriculum is celebrated for its structured, research-based approach to teaching phonemic awareness—a foundational skill for early reading development.

    • Phonemic awareness is teaching letter sound awareness before students see words in print - a precursor to phonics and reading.

    • As students progress, phonemic awareness is then paired with phonics and reading.
  • Science and Social Studies

    • Students complete collaborative projects based on students’ interests, making complex scientific concepts accessible and enjoyable for young learners while integrating state standards.

    • Mystery Science, part of the overall science program, emphasizes phenomena-driven instruction, encouraging students to think and act like scientists through exploration and discussion.

    • Our teachers create their own social studies curriculum in addition to Scholastic News and Science Spin.
  • Math

    • Our teachers utilize Saxon Math as a framework for math instruction, incorporating games and activities based on student interest.

What is a hybrid school?

  • So, what is hybrid homeschooling exactly?

The term “hybrid homeschool” refers to an education model where learning takes place partially at home and partially at a brick and mortar building with trained teachers. For CCS that ratio is Mondays and Friday afternoons are spent at home learning, while Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings, learning takes place at CCS with live instruction from teachers.

  • Why does CCS offer hybrid homeschool?

Parents have been opting for alternative education choices now more than ever. This is a unique model that offers the best qualities of traditional school (community, socialization, and live instruction from trained teachers) and homeschooling (personalized attention, space and time for skills and studies you find valuable, time with your child). We value the collaborations and partnerships between the parents and teachers formed within this model.

On hybrid days, students receive lesson plans and materials to work on at home. These are designed to align with the in-class curriculum, ensuring continuity in their education.

  • Why do parents choose the hybrid model?

Time is a gift. Our children grow so quickly. The hybrid model gives families more time together than traditional school models. The hybrid model allows families a portion of this time back together. This time can be cherished while not putting all of the educational responsibility on the parent. The parents and teachers work collaboratively on the student's behalf, each providing valuable insights.

Polling data reveals that 49% of parents would prefer their child learn from home at least one day a week. While 10% want full-time homeschooling, the remaining 39% of parents desire their child to learn at home one to four days a week, with the remaining days attending school on-campus. Another parent poll indicates that an astonishing 64% of parents indicated that if they were looking for a new school for their child, they would enroll him or her in a hybrid school.

  • Overwhelmed by taking on Homeschooling?

The hybrid model provides a chance for parents to “dip their toe” into homeschooling. Again, the educational responsibilities are shared between parent and teacher. There is a sense of community within the hybrid program, families will feel plugged in and supported being surrounded by like-minded teachers and families.

  • How does the hybrid model benefit students?

Students participating in hybrid homeschool are able to form friendships with their peers, learn from experienced teachers, and learn to navigate the social challenges that arise from a group setting. In addition to these benefits, the hybrid model allows students to have the space to grow skills catered to their own unique interests (for example: horseback riding, golf, or music lessons), additional meaningful time with their family, and less morning haste.

  • Personal Testimony

“Every year my heart would ache when back to school time arrived each August. I was satisfied with the school my children were attending but I experienced a constant gnawing feeling that this was not ideal. I had conflicting feelings because my kids seemed to enjoy attending school and I remember as a child I enjoyed my time as a student. On the other hand, I felt that my children were gone for the better part of the day and by the time they arrived back home they were tired and cranky, not allowing much time for connection. There were hobbies, trips, and experiences I felt we were missing out on due to 71% of their weekly time away at school. I have been interested in the idea of homeschooling but I knew it would be challenging with two kids and a toddler. Enter CCS Hybrid Homeschool Program. I am relieved to find this uncommon opportunity in Stark County! I have been searching (and praying) for a hybrid option for my childrens education and I believe CCS is the answer to this prayer of my heart. Two of my three kids will be attending CCS this fall enrolled in the Hybrid Program. As i look ahead to this school year my heart is not aching but instead filled with an excited anticipation of the adventures to be had with my children and alongside CCS.” - Laura Barlekamp

FAQ

  • What is the structure of the Board of Directors?

Canton Christian School’s Board of Directors is made up of at least five directors.  More can be added at any time. At least two of those five directors will be parents of current students of Canton Christian School. We also encourage our teachers to designate at least one teacher representative to attend all meetings of the Board of Directors in a non-voting capacity.

  • How will important decisions like tuition increases, hiring/firing, accepting government money, be decided?

There are important decisions to be made from year to year that can have a major impact on our families and organization.  We do not take these decisions lightly and will work towards consensus before moving forward.  The following actions must be approved by a supermajority vote of directors present at a meeting at which a quorum is present:

    • Tuition increases in excess of the Consumer Price Index
    • Hiring and firing of the executive director
    • Amending this Code of Regulations or the Articles of Incorporation
    • Dissolution of the Corporation
    • A change in the status of the Corporation’s operations as governed by the Ohio Department of Education
    • The acceptance of any government funding

  • How can I be more involved as a parent?

All parents of students and all teaching staff of Canton Christian School are automatically members of our Parent-Teacher Organization. The Parent-Teacher Organization will serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors and the Board of Directors will make regular reports to the Parent-Teacher Organization. The Parent-Teacher Organization will meet at least twice during the school year and will nominate parents of students to serve on the Board of Directors.

  • Are there any committees for parents?

YES!  We are planning on having five committees.  Each committee will consist of one director and at least three parents.  The committees include: board governance and recruitment, parent advisory committee, finance and budget, curriculum and programs, and admissions.
